The WEREAWAY Story

May 6, 2020

In 2016, our family decided it was time for a break. Life felt overbooked, hectic, and chaotic. Stephan and I both love to travel, and our kids weren’t in school yet, so the timing felt right. We traded our South Carolina home for an apartment in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and later for a seaside cottage in Jose Ignacio, Uruguay. At first, the thought of international travel with a 4- and 3-year-old was nerve-racking, but after a few months in South America, we realized that it’s actually very doable—and even has a few perks! Those precious months together, away from all the stress of daily life, brought us closer than we ever expected. By the time we got home, we were already planning our next adventure: a six-month trip around the world. In 2017, we traveled to French Polynesia, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Belize, the Bahamas, Italy, Slovenia, Montenegro, Spain, Portugal, England and Scotland. The journey was so transformative that we decided to have another baby. In March 2018, while we were camping in a Volkswagen van in Portugal, we found out I was pregnant with Henry!

So now we’re a family of five, trying to see as much as we can, while we can. Throughout our travels, I’ve kept an Instagram journal. It started out as a travelogue, mostly just for us, but I’ve received so much support from followers that I wanted to build it into something more—a place where I can answer questions like where to go, what to pack, what to do, how to keep the kids entertained and share our stories and photos. Of course, everyone’s journey is different. This is ours. My hope is that our travel experiences will inspire you to find your own unique way of travelling as a family. Remember—even with kids—where there’s a will, there’s a way. We are a way!
